Sara Laura Quintero Ortiz

1962 -

Laura Ortiz, a soprano, directs children’s, women's and adult choirs, gives voice lessons, and teaches theory and basic and choral conducting at the University of Montemorelos in Mexico. She has been a soloist in Handel's Messiah, Hayden's Creation, the Brahm's Requiem, Mozart's Coronation Mass, and others.

Laura spent her childhood at the university. She started piano lessons at age seven and sang in the children's choirs in the conservatory program. In her academy years, she studied music under Hector and Carlos Flores, an experience she would later refer to as both important and inspiring. She completed a B.Mus. in vocal performance at UM in 1983, studying under Maziaz de Oliveira and Nobleza Pilar, and later completed an M.Ed. in school administration.

Ortiz won second place at the Internacional Opera Contest at San Luis Potosi, Mexico, in 1985. Since 1981 she has conducted Emanuel, a popular small select singing group that has traveled in Mexico and the U.S. and has recorded six CDs.
