Matthew
Sandvik, singer and conductor, teaches music and
other subjects at Amazing Grace Academy in Palmer, Alaska, a position he has
held since 2011. Prior to this, he was the music teacher at Livingston
Adventist Academy in Salem, Oregon.
Matthew
and his twin brother, Michael, were born in Palmer, Alaska, the
oldest of three sons of Randolph and Patti Ausmus Sandvik, both of whom are talented amateur musicians. Their father, a cornet and French horn
player, and their mother, a flutist, both encouraged their three sons as they
pursued music, starting them with piano lessons at an early age. Music was an
important activity in the home and also in the extended Sandvik
family, which includes several accomplished singers.
Matthew
attended Auburn Adventist Academy in Washington, where he sang in the choirs
under John Neuman.
He was inspired by that experience and following graduation from AAA,
enrolled at Walla Walla College, now University, where he graduated with a B.Mus.Ed. in 2006, and an M.A.T.
in 2007.
He
accepted a position at the academy in Salem in 2007 and taught there for the
next four years before returning to Alaska to teach at the academy located in
the town of his birth.
